LEADERS OF TOMORROW

A Nation of Broken Promises

Editorial story cover
new draftnigerian fiction

And so I became a child,

Promised to be the leader of tomorrow,

But the only thing that I’m leading,

Is the headline on the news.

My name has become a subject of protest.

And my fears have become the greedy man’s bounty.

I should be in school,

Dreaming of becoming a leader of tomorrow,

But here I am,

Praying I would be able to see tomorrow.

Praying that I see Baba’s face one more time.

And tell him that I passed my English test.

And even though 4 over 10 would not make me have two heads,

At least the numbers would be counted on my test sheet,

Rather than the statistics on the headlines.
